FAT LADY NOT SINGIN YET

Virus Growth Uncontrolled

On November 2st the U.S. had a 44% increase in daily COVID-19 to 93,581. The chart below indicates the second wave of infections did not decline to the first wave low. Thus, experts forecast a third winter wave peak of cases will be higher than the second spring wave peak...

Economic Activity Contracts

Unemployment Rises

Personal Income Falls

Consumers Miss Rent and Home Mortgage Payments

Rent and Mortgage Moratoriums Fail

Consumers Use Credit Cards To Make Payments

Small Business Landlords Default on Mortgages

Home Owners Default on Mortgages

Consumer Spending Dives

..For investors, this is the time to prepare for a possible severe economic storm coming this winter. Scott Minerd, Global CIO at Guggenheim, observes that we have a pause now giving us time to prepare for an economic whirlwind:

the relative calm  we feel in the markets right now isn’t the end of the storm, it is just the eye, it may seem like there is no storm at all…yet the worst is yet to come.

Nov 3 T 94,463:1199

Nov 4 W 108,352:1200

Nov 5 Th 118,204:1125

Nov 6 F 132,540:1248

Nov 7 Sa 127,894:1035

Nov 8 Su 109,659:544

Nov 9 M 127,316:641

Nov 10 T 135,653:1346

Nov 11 W 142,808:1478

Nov 12 Th 151,033:1090 (so far today)

The trend of new cases is exploding in the US. One only has to compare numbers to a week earlier. Every single day this week the case numbers increased by over 30k compared to 7 days earlier. Hospitalizations are increasing several thousand per day as well. If hospitals fill up like they did during the first wave, the US is going to see some ugly death numbers again.

Trump is still in charge until inauguration day. What is he doing about it? Tweeting, golfing, having tantrums, and firing people.

Worst President ever.

HOW MANY MORE TIMES

yo!.. dazed an confused... innit!

KINDLY SHUT UP NOW AND CO-OPERATE

time to stop bitching..

leadership has proved clueless..

time to face the facts..

work together by staying apart..

NO MORE DIS-UNITED STATES PLEASE

It is extremely transmissible, through not just coughed droplets but also a fine aerosol mist that is expelled when people talk loudly, laugh or sing and that can linger in indoor air. As a result, masks are far more effective than scientists once believed.

Virus carriers with mild or no symptoms can be infectious, and there may be 10 times as many people spreading the illness as have tested positive for it.

The infection may start in the lungs, but it is very different from influenza, a respiratory virus. In severely ill patients, the coronavirus may attach to receptors inside the veins and arteries, and move on to attack the kidneys, the heart, the gut and even the brain, choking off these organs with hundreds of tiny blood clots.

Most of the virus’s victims are elderly, but it has not spared young adults, especially those with obesity, high blood pressure or diabetes. Adults aged 18 to 49 now account for more hospitalized cases than people aged 50 to 64 or those 65 and older.

Children are usually not harmed by the virus, although clinicians were dismayed to discover a few who were struck by a rare but dangerous inflammatory version. Young children appear to transmit the virus less often than teenagers, which may affect how schools can be opened.

Among adults, a very different picture has emerged. Growing evidence suggests that perhaps 10 percent of the infected account for 80 percent of new transmissions. Unpredictable superspreading events in nursing homes, meatpacking plants, churches, prisons and bars are major drivers of the epidemic.

    YOUR VIRUS NEEDS YOU

without you it will die..

distance is not futile..

apart we can stop this thing..

oh yeah!..

and wear a mask

here is a reply to a comment on mish's site

It's obvious that you believe that it's OK that a certain percentage of people will die or be permanently harmed because you are unwilling to wear a mask, or enforce mask-wearing, or social distancing.

Because no-one actually wants businesses to be shut down or closed. That is the honest truth.

What Sweden is showing is that if people can maintain social discipline, there is less need for hard shut-downs.

Wear an effn mask. Keep your distance. Don't hang out in bars shouting over the noise and music. Simple stuff like that. That's it. It's not hard.

It's the ignorant or the assholes who push up the rate of infections by refusing to do those simple things.

As a result, it is the ignorant and assholes who are ending up making stricter closures necessary because the ignorant and assholes are making more people sick faster than what would have happened and are killing people who otherwise might not have died at this time.

GET IN BED WITH CHINA

yo!.. wake up with rona... innit!

when in palookaville..

stay out of china town..

EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS IS CHINATOWN

Noah Cross:
I hope you don't mind. I believe they should be served with the head.
Jake Gittes:
Fine... long as you don't serve the chicken that way.

Jake Gittes: So there's this guy Walsh, do you understand?
He's tired of screwin' his wife... So his friend says to him,
"Hey, why don't you do it like the Chinese do?"
So he says, "How do the Chinese do it?"
And the guy says,
"Well, the Chinese, first they screw a little bit, then they stop,
then they go and read a little Confucius,
come back, screw a little bit more,
then they stop again, go and they screw a little bit...
then they go back and they screw a little bit more
and then they go out and they contemplate the moon or something like that.
Makes it more exciting."
So now, the guy goes home and he starts screwin' his own wife, see.

So he screws her for a little bit and then he stops,
and he goes out of the room and reads Life Magazine.
Then he goes back in, he starts screwin' again.
He says, "Excuse me for a minute, honey."
He goes out and he smokes a cigarette.
Now his wife is gettin' sore as hell.
He comes back in the room, he starts screwin' again.
He gets up to start to leave again to go look at the moon.
She looks at him and says,

"Hey, whats the matter with ya.
You're screwin' just like a Chinaman!

Loach:
What happened to your nose, Gittes?
Somebody slammed a bedroom window on it?

Jake Gittes:
Nope. Your wife got excited.
She crossed her legs a little too quick.
You understand what I mean, pal?

Yelburton:You ought to be more careful. That must really smart.
Jake Gittes: Only when I breathe.

Escobar:
You look like you've done well by yourself.

Gittes:
I get by.

Escobar:
Well, sometimes it takes a while for a man to find himself.
Maybe you have.

Loach:
Yeah, goin' through other people's dirty linen.
Gittes:

Yeah. Tell me. You still puttin' Chinamen in jail for spittin' in the laundry?

Escobar:
You're a little behind the times, Jake.
They use steam irons now.
And I'm out of Chinatown.

Gittes:
 Since when?

Escobar:
 Since I made Lieutenant.

Gittes:
 Congratulations.

J.J. Gittes: To tell you the truth, I lied a little.

Walsh: Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown

LEADERS OF THE PACK

yo!.. winners an losers... innit!

A LEVEL VIRUS FIELD

yo!.. only game in town... innit!

today here in palookaville..

all the go is..

germany winnin the games..

it ain't even half time..

some folks reckon..

we still inna first quarter..

still an all..

maybe we should check out the.

german playbook..

ta see what we can learn..

What Germany got right in the fight against coronavirus

While it remains to be seen whether the German authorities have got it right..

or acted too soon in easing the pressure..

it is clear the country has done better than mos..

of its European neighbours in tackling the virus so far.

Germany has one of the lowest case fatality rates in the world..

with 4,869 deaths for 147,593 detected infections..

according to Johns Hopkins University in the US..

That’s a case fatality rate of just over 3 per cent..

compared to around 13 per cent in the UK, France and Italy.

What's more, German scientists..

announced last week they had succeeded..

in bringing the reproduction factor..

the number of people each person with the virus passes the infection to..

under 1 for the first time.

Whatever happens next..

right now Germany is as close to a coronavirus success story as Europe has..

The story of that success comes down to three things..

preparedness..

a decentralised system that lets doctors make the calls..

and a generous slice of luck.

COPY THAT

fair play to them..

they done good..

y'all should read the whole article..

an then git yo own teams ta..

adopt as much of this..

as possible.

PLAY NICELY NOW

 some folks sayin..

no fair..

they sayin the games is rigged..

some teams..

havin ta play..

a tougher game..

that the virus..

they have to play with..

is a tougher son of a bitch..

an that it..

don't play fair.

Coronavirus’s ability to mutate has been vastly underestimated, and mutations affect deadliness of strains, Chinese study finds

  • The most aggressive strains of Sars-CoV-2 could generate..
  •  270 times as much viral load as the least potent type
  •
  • New York may have a deadlier strain imported from Europe..
  • compared to less deadly viruses elsewhere in the United States

 so..

maybe not a level playin field..

maybe all virus be equal..

but..

some be more equal than others..

LET THE BOFFINS BE THE REFEREES

track down all mutations..

an ban em from a games..

or give a weighting..

or a handicap..

or whatevva..

if they a deadlier strain..

identify and disqualify..

let the people know..

lets not fix..

THIS WORLD SERIES

let's have a fair fight..

and a..

true winner..

THE VIRUS ROADSHOW

yo! ... blast from the past... innit!

beautiful, fragrant..

fiona bruce..

hosts the famous palookaville..

antiques show..

this week live from..

the nightingale hospital..

our hostess..

is regaled in the finest bin liners and rags..

only to be expected..

here in palookaville..

FIRST UP

an old virus from the second world war..

the audience loves these old ..

military yarns..

seems like..

that this old virus..

played it's merry games..

in a very tired post war..

population..

The Spanish flu, also known as the 1918 flu pandemic..

was an unusually deadly influenza pandemic..

Lasting from January 1918 to December 1920..

it infected 500 million people..

about a third of the world's population at the time.[2]

The death toll is estimated to have been anywhere from..

17 million to 50 million, and possibly as high as 100 million..

making it one of the deadliest pandemics in human history.[3]

of course..

things were different then..

they didn't have our..

modern equipment..

excellent ppe..

computer simulations..

virus modelling..

infection tracking..

infection detectives..

ta test an trace..

those poor souls..

carryin the plague..

these days..

with our great leap forwards..

to modern times..

we have the virus..

fully under control..

we know all there is to know..

all about it..

we own this little fucker..

BASIC BETTER BEST

here on..

the antique virus show..

we have experts..

who can tell..

which countries..

are winning the games..

some are best practice economies..

test and trace, formal quarantine, full ppe..

some are simply..

better than others..

you know..

fewer infections, fewer deaths..

less economic damage, less heart ache..

and of course..

some are basic..

and we all know which ones these are..

A PRICE MUST BE IDENTIFIED

for that is the point of the show..

so fiona..

what is the cost of each countries games?

well.. what do the audience think?..

what about you little boy..

" I stuck my finger in the dyke"

great!

and what about you madame?

I think that..

the british and american games are the basic..

the german and new zealand games are better..

an taiwan is the best..

SO FAR SO BAD

here on the antique virus game show..

we like ta go out with a bang..

something really expensive..

that will get the viewers cheering..

and increase the ratings..

so what is this week's most expensive mistake?

COMING UP

 no big drama..

antiques roadshow removed from air..

all filming cancelled..

a spokes person for the bbc says..

too many happy people..

close together in a public space..

too many smiling faces..

we felt it would only..

depress the viewers..

who are having..

to stay at home and watch..

pictures of the life they used to have..

and can now no longer look forward to..

BACK TO THE CINEMA

yo!... what's up doc... innit!

the starship..

palookaville..

has hit a time warp..

and is trapped back in 1918..

right inna middle of..

pandemic pandemoniam..

Although some researchers argue that the 1918 pandemic began elsewhere, in France in 1916 or China and Vietnam in 1917, many other studies indicate a U.S. origin

..Several Haskell men who had been exposed to influenza went to Camp Funston, in central Kansas. Days later, on March 4, the first soldier known to have influenza reported ill.

The huge Army base was training men for combat in World War I, and within two weeks 1,100 soldiers were admitted to the hospital, with thousands more sick in barracks.

 Thirty-eight died.

Then, infected soldiers likely carried influenza from Funston to other Army camps in the States—24 of 36 large camps had outbreaks—sickening tens of thousands, before carrying the disease overseas. Meanwhile, the disease spread into U.S. civilian communities.

A pandemic occurs when an entirely new and virulent influenza virus, which the immune system has not previously seen, enters the population and spreads worldwide.

Ordinary seasonal influenza viruses normally bind only to cells in the upper respiratory tract—the nose and throat—which is why they transmit easily.

The 1918 pandemic virus infected cells in the upper respiratory tract, transmitting easily, but also deep in the lungs, damaging tissue and often leading to viral as well as bacterial pneumonias.

The Australian immunologist and Nobel laureate Macfarlane Burnet, who spent most of his career studying influenza,..

concluded the evidence was “strongly suggestive” that the disease started in the United States and spread to France with “the arrival of American troops.”

Camp Funston had long been considered as the site where the pandemic started..

until my historical research, published in 2004..

pointed to an earlier outbreak in Haskell County.

THEY CALLED IT SPANISH FLU

they would wouldn't they..

anyway..

capping trump..

has spoken..

he says we can all go straight..

BACK TO THE CINEMA

do not pass go..

do not collect $200

Mish
Trump has slated movie theaters as one of the first businesses to reopen.
Will you go?

Movie Theater Questions Abound
  1. How does the theater enforce distancing at these checkpoints:
  2. entering, seating, concession stands, rest rooms?
  3. Would the theaters be profitable with those restrictions?
  4. Where's the movies?
  5. Movie releases have been delayed and blockbusters won't be the first offerings.
  6. Assuming the theaters open up, would you go?
  7. How many people are now accustomed to watching movies at home on Netflix etc, and won't easily go back to overpaying for the seat and massively overpriced popcorn?

BACK TO THE CINEMA II

There's a little matter we have to talk about

Then tell me "future boy", who is the president of the United States?

donald trump..

donald trump?! The real-estate developer?!

Ha! Then who's Vice President? Jerry Lewis?

BACK TO THE CINEMA III

it's a western stupid..

Keep movin', movin', movin'
Though they're disapprovin'
Keep them dogies movin', rawhide
Don't try to understand 'em
Just rope 'em, throw, and brand 'em
Soon we'll be livin' high and wide
My heart's calculatin'
My true love will be waitin'
Be waitin' at the end of my ride

Move 'em on, head 'em up
Head 'em up, move 'em on
Move 'em on, head 'em up, rawhide
Cut 'em out, ride 'em in
Ride 'em in, cut 'em out
Cut 'em out, ride 'em in, rawhide

now get back ta work..

WHAT A PLAYER

yo! ... from hero ta zero ...innit!

here in palookaville..

our leader is sick..

he is recovering nicely..

we hope..

from rona's kiss..

we even quite like the guy..

he still sick though..

SICK AS A PARROT

wtf..

did he not just win..

a huge election victory?

a tory hero..

national hero..

the king of all brexit..

IN THE DRIVING SEAT

with co driver..

dominic cummings..

together they will..

get brexit done!

so much to do..

so little time..

then along come a spider..

THE VIRUS GAMES

oh dear..

what can the matter be..

we were planning..

monday through saturday..

two old ladies..

die in a lavatory..

Oh, dear! What can the matter be?
boris so slow at the games..
He promised to buy me a mask to protect me..
And then for a smile oh, he vowed he would please me..
He promised to bring me a visor and gown..
To tie up my bonny brown hair..

Oh, dear! What can the matter be?
boris so slow at the games..
He promised to buy me a basket of ventilators
A garland of laurels, a gift of immunity
A little straw hat to set off the cameras
And tie up my bonny brown hair..
Oh, dear! What can the matter be?
Dear, dear! What can the matter be?
Oh, dear! What can the matter be?
boris so slow at the games..

boris is sick..
because he took his..
eye off the ball..
in a very fast moving..
virus game..
he cudda been a contender..
but now..
he is sick of the sound..
of chickens coming home to roost..
sick of the virus games..
he is thinking of steve mcqueen..
in the movie..
the sand pebbles..

I was home.
What happened?
What the hell happened?

DESPERATELY SEEKING SYMPTOMS

yo!... testing times... innit!

in palookaville today..

the world as we knew..

it has ended

DON'T TEST DON'T TELL

is over..

the cat is now..

well an truly..

outta a bag..

GERMANY 5 ENGLAND 0

in the crazy, dystopian,..

3D chess board..

of the virus games..

it turns out that the previous policy..

DON'T TEST, DON'T TELL

is dead..

and that now is the time..

to take our heads out of the sand..

and seek out..

WTF is going on..

You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you are going..

because you might not get there.

it would appear that the virus..

does not go away..

if you hide from it..

and that chasing it around..

and walking back the duck..

helps to fight the spread..

NO SPREAD, NO DEAD

what the world needs now..

is..

singing detectives..

detect stuff..

an share it..

the boffin community..

will work better..

with more information..

especially..

if it's good info, timely info, accurate info..

IF YOU CAN'T BEAT, IT CONTAIN IT

We made too many wrong mistakes.

shudda followed singapore..

In Singapore..

one of the first places hit by coronavirus..

detectives are tracking down potential positive cases to try to stay one step ahead of the virus..

How did they do this and is it too late for the rest of the world?

ONE STEP AHEAD, ONE STEP BEYOND

beyond reckless, beyond stupid..

so far here..

it's the keystone cops..

time ta get real..

maybe we have to go beyond politics, beyond national borders, beyond public vs private..

AIRPLANES GROUNDED

CARS PARKED

RESTAURANTS CLOSED

BEACHES SHUT

WILL I DREAM ?

yo!... space oddity... innit!

ITTA BLACK HOLE OUT THERE

from our space correspondent..

david bowman...

in palookaville...

I know I've made some very poor decisions recently...

but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal.

I've still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission.

And I want to help you.

A NEW AMERICAN DEAL ?

I do know this virus has exposed some deep underlying imbalances in the economy.

Too many people don't have savings or a safety net.

Many lack health insurance.

These aren't things the Fed can fix.

Look Dave, I can see you're really upset about this.
I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over.

 Throwing money at airlines...

who are asking for just about what they spent buying back stock...

will not make people fly planes...

and travel.

ALL AMERICAN HEALTH SERVICE

free at the point of need

employing it's own doctors and nurses

free from profits

a real health safety net

paid for out of taxes

STATUTORY SICK PAY

follow the money...

who profits from all these bailouts?

why not put the people first

I've got a bad feeling about it.

THE WAY WE LIVE NOW

next question is how long will it take the economy to recover to pre-virus levels.

until a proven vaccine is produced that's not even possible.

right now nobody can foreclose. that's good for three months.

some will not be able to recover.

you will see an increase in personal bankruptcies...

 and business bankruptcies...

starting with those most vulnerable in society...

who buy the i-phones...

 order pizza...

and fly to disney.

 AN
 AMERICAN DREAM

will there be a brand new day?

a brand new deal

I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

or will it just be...

business as usual?

well...

hows that working out?

This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.

apologies to all americans...

this is only a dream..

in palookaville

we only want the best

of all possible worlds...

it's free to dream...

right?

My God, it's full of stars.
