INFLATION 1980

 yo!.. look back in wonder..innit!

here in palookaville..

we think the mortgage rate @6% is high..

but when this photo was taken..

the rate was 15.5%..

NOT JUST THE JOB WALTER

sitting here with my boss standing next to me..

I was 28..

It was a good job..

graphics and photography..

we all had a 16% raise in 1979..

and 21% raise in 1980..

then the job was made redundant..

me out first..

then the boss..

then the whole drawing office..

I moved house..

into the centre of the city..

sold the car..

we brewed all our own beer..

switched off the hot water and the heating..

I had to sell all my marvel comics..

for £500  that's £2,743.18 pounds today..

that's $3453.

to pay the mortgage arrears..

SOCIAL SECURITY

there was help with mortgage interest payments back then..

and grants for students as well..

I went back to college..

qualified as a teacher..

mortgage rates went down..

eventually..

but 10.5% was still normal..

our actual mortgage amount was for £14,000..

the new house had cost us £23,000 in 1980..

our previous house we bought for £11,500..

in 1978..

we sold it for £21,000+..

in 1980..

THE VALUE OF PAPER MONEY

people here in palookaville..

talk of getting on the housing ladder..

they think houses only go up in value..

but the truth is..

it's the money that goes down in value..

it's all just inflation really..

MIGHTY MARVEL MELT UP

I wonder what my marvel comics are worth now..

the first 36 spideys..

(all the Steve ditkos)

first 20 x-men..

first 24 Conan the barbarian..

many more..

THE BEAR DRONES ON

yo!.. seize the dough.. innit!

REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL

russia to build own Iran drones..

yield curve inverts..

sticky inflation..

crapto collapse..

buffett rule - stocks still 166%

fed hawkish..

qt..

recession warnings..

stagflation threat..

eps falling..

8 billion souls..

climate change..

zero covid policy..

challenging world order..

santa rally surely..

gamblers still buying..

IF NOT NOW WHEN?

some think that..

this time it's different..

that the fed will stick to it's guns..

others think..

what are the chances?

ME

I think I will wait and see..

I was too early in 2000..

on time in 2009..

but never got fully invested..

I made a good call..

in 2020..

but again failed to fully profit..

I don't have the time left to mess around..

with this casino..

where the house has got it rigged..

we are all awaiting..

some great puke..

you can feel it coming..

but nothing happens..

FALSE BOTTOMS

and..

political meddling..

interest rate suppression..

and ever expanding debt..

bail outs for all..

NEXT YEAR WILL BE DIFFERENT

at any rate it is possible..

if earnings per share..

fall..

and interest rates stick..

and currencies correct..

and politics keeps out..

and yields rise further..

and demand dissolves..

buyers disappear..

the great pundit says..

wait for it..

the bottom ain't yet in..

then maybe a real buying opportunity..

will come along..

again..

but..

THIS IS PALOOKAVILLE

and any day now..

slowly then suddenly..

sooner than we think..

we may wish..

we had been more careful..

about what we wished for..

STUDIO VIEW OF THE FED

yo!.. bollox.. innit!

here in palookaville..

we await the news from the fed..

where the wizards of oz..

gaze into their navels..

WAITING FOR GODOT

all the palookas..

are running around..

expecting a slowdown in the rate of rates..

and are prepared to bet paper money..

on the wimp out agenda..

WTF

this whole raising of interest rates lark has only just started..

after years and years of zirp..

inflation has yet to even droop..

and yet they cry uncle..

AND YET

we are all so bamboozled..

by this bunch..

that we don't know what to do..

what you think should happen..

and what will happen..

have fallen out..

probably..

independant central banks arn't..

and probably..

they will be called to heal..

but surely not just yet..

and yet..

THE FIRST LAW OF BUBBLES

when you find yourself in one....

STOP BLOWING..

here in palookaville..

all bets are off..

WAITING FOR THE MAN

rumour has it that..

the stock market will crash again..

some day soon..

and one day the rumour may be true..

but fucked if we know when..

THE MAN WHO FIXED THE WORLD SERIES

has fixed the news..

has fixed the market..

has fixed inflation..

has fixed the plunge..

has fixed the rates,

has fixed the junk,

ALL THE ASSET LESSONS

have been prepared..

but not learned..

a false sense of securities..

is the only sense in town..

STRIKING IT RICH

here in palookaville..

we are short..

but we are not happy..

we long to be long..

we long to belong..

but we are short..

man we was lonely..

could have been rich..

at least on paper..

could have used that paper to buy stuff..

CAUGHT SHORT

read the disclaimer..

this is not advice..

advice is cheap..

but seldom timely..

COME THE DAY

 when securities..

are fully insecure..

we may well be long..

and yet still be wrong..

BLACK HOLE ECONOMICS

yo!... star trekkin... innit!

the uss enterprise...

the palookaville starship...

is in a black hole...

IT'S ONLY THE NEBULA STUPID

admiral donald t kirk...

has hit the hole in one...

can the FEDS...

save the day?

THE GOLD STANDARD

admiral nixon...

has taken all the gold on board...

the uss fort knox...

whilst admiral brown...

has swapped our gold...

for paper euros

KLINGONS ONNA STARBOARD BOW

since the trade wars...

the klingons are calling names...

and won't share sweets...

admiral donald t kirk...

has ordered PPE...

it's on order..

but..

is it here?

STAND OFF IN PALOOKAVILLE

lost in space...

and with nothing to do...

the crew are getting restless...

voices are calling for a range of options...

re-start the economy...

print more money...

give the crew a rise...

the crew just want a holiday...

whilst the admiral just...

wants to play golf...

THE HOSPITAL SHIP

uss new york...

is under attack from the virus...

captain cuomo...

has called for a federation effort...

an all out attack...

led by admiral donald t kirk...

and paid for..

by printing dollars

 unfortunately...

the hospital ship is sinking...

from the weight...

of unemployed crew..

taking up space...

PAPER WINGS

it's worse than that...

they're dead don...

"where the hell's the vaccine"...

"light years away"...

TAKE BACK CONTROL

the virus can not be controlled...

so we must control the crew...

no holidays and no sick pay...

no jobs...

an only paper money

THE WAY TO THE SARS

out here in space...

there should be room for all of us..

to distance ourselves from...

our mistakes...

but

THIS SPACE AIN'T BIG ENOUGH FOR THE BOTH OF US

whether you believe...

in sound money...

the gold standard...

or just like to print...

navigating in space is difficult...

it's bad enough...

having to steer a course...

around all the bastards...

out here...

without this deadly virus...

We made too many wrong mistakes.

and...

A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore.

and...

Slump? I ain’t in no slump…
I just ain’t hitting.

COMPUTERS AIN'T WHAT THEY USED TA BE

HAL 9000
I've just picked up a fault in the AE35 unit...
It's going to go 100% failure in 72 hours
I am putting myself to the fullest possible use...
which is all I think that any conscious entity...
can ever hope to do
 HAL 9000
I'm afraid...
Dave Bowman..
Don't be. We'll be together...
HAL 9000..
Where will we be?
Dave Bowman..
Where I am now
DON'T TEST DON'T TELL
You’ve got to be very careful...
if you don’t know where you are going because...
you might not get there.
EVERY BODY KNOWS THIS IS NOWHERE
admiral..
donald t kirk..
of the starship..
enterprise..
is stuck in a hole in space
he didn't aim to get there..
he just wasn't listening to his officers..
now his face is..
on screen..
all day..
every day..
talking to keep his..
spirits up..
waiting for the vaccine..
to arrive..
thru..
the wormhole..
at..
warp speed!
so
PAPER MONEY VERSUS GOLD
unemployment goin thru a roof..
no more enterprise..
big bazookas firin evva more paper..
DIVIDED WE FALL
jus when a wurl..
needa helpin hand..
political parties..
are divided
it's probably nothing really..
just about who gets the pork..
and the bailouts..
COMING NEXT

can uss enterprise print it's way out of this black hole?

will klingons come to the table?
what will gold do?
how many will die..
from the virus..
when will there be a vaccine..
will anyone evva fly again..
will we carry on cruising..
will the world ever be the same again..
whose to blame?
what are the real numbers?
who profits?
where is the all this money going?
A LAST WORD FROM HAL
Are you sure you're making the right decision?
I think we should stop.

A Zombie Because

yo!...this is not advice...

PALOOKAVILLE FINANCIAL
capitulation day
+266...

..."The world is setting up for a big crash, again.

Market chatter over green shoots and rising prices has fueled a bear market rally that won't last, despite policymaker 'noise.'

Since the last bubble burst, governments around the world have not been focusing on reforms.

They are trying to pump a new bubble to solve existing problems.

Before inflation appears, this strategy works.

As inflation expectation rises, its effectiveness is threatened.

When inflation appears in 2010, another crash will come.

If you are a speculator and confident you can get out before it crashes, this is your market. If you think this market is for real, you are making a mistake and should get out as soon as possible. If you lost money during your last three market entries, stay away from this one – as far as you can."

Special 'Flation Issue

yo!...

PALOOKAVILLE FINANCIAL
capitulation day
+250...

...people may think that...

...here in palookaville...

...we are firmly in the...

...deflationary camp...

WE DON'T DO CAMP

...eyes on the road...

...ears to the wall...

...watch out for Mr Inbetween...

..."It all depends upon unit labour costs and the state of demand in the economy. In fact, pay here seems to have responded more quickly to the economic downturn. Average earnings growth actually turned negative earlier this year. Although this was primarily due to the impact of sharply lower bonuses in the City, the figure was also boosted by continued strong pay growth in the public sector. And that can't last. In the private sector not a day goes by without another company announcing a freeze or even a cut in regular pay.

So the upshot is that the deflation danger is not yet old hat. People are watching the wrong thing. Don't look at the short term twitchings of the RPI or CPI but rather at the behaviour of wages and salaries.

Of course, if the Chancellor is right and by the end of this year the economy is bouncing back strongly, then the deflation danger, like all the others, will quickly melt away as the strengthening economy eventually boosts employment prospects, pay rates harden and firms are more able to push prices up. But if you want to back that particular horse, I would strongly advise you to put your money on each way."

...Roger Bootle...

Mortgage Meltdown, More Pain To Come

..."What can't be paid back will be defaulted on. Consumers with no job have no chance of paying back those debts. Many others who could, won't (because it is in their best interest to walk away). The Alt-A and Option ARM defaults are going to be massive.

Think this leads to inflation? Think again."

'FLATION GONNA FLIP

ambrose : ..."
Clearly the US is already in the grip of debt-deflation. "The obvious conclusion is that the Fed should print money to purchase private sector assets so as to drive up their price," he said.

Fed chief Ben Bernanke does not need prompting. He made his name as a Princeton professor studying the "credit channel" causes of depressions. Now fate has put him in charge of the channel.

Under his guidance, the Fed has this week pledged to "employ all available tools" to stave off deflation - and damn the torpedoes. It will purchase "large quantities of agency debt and mortgage-backed securities." It will evaluate "the potential benefits of purchasing longer-term Treasury securities," i.e, printing money to pay the Pentagon.

Put bluntly, the Fed is deliberately stoking inflation. At some point it will succeed. Then the risk flips quickly to spiralling inflation as the elastic snaps back. There will be a second point of danger.

By late 2009, if not before, the bond vigilantes may start to fret about the liquidity lake. They will worry that the Fed may have to start feeding its holdings of debt back onto the market. The Fed's balance sheet has already risen from $800bn in September to $2.2 trillion this month. It will be $3 trillion by early next year.

"The bond markets could go into free fall," said Marc Ostwald from Monument Securities.

"The Fed went into this all guns blazing just as the Neo-cons went into Iraq thinking it was a great idea to get rid of Saddam, without planning an exit strategy. As soon as we get the first uptick in inflation, the markets are going to turn and say this is what we feared would happen all along. Then what?" he said.

New Star's Simon Ward said all three measures of the US broad money supply are flashing recovery. M2 has risen at annual rate of 17pc over three months.

"It has all changed since the Fed began buying commercial paper in October. If the money supply is booming at 20pc in six months, inflation will become a concern. Given that public debt ratios are already on an explosive path, we risk a debt trap," he said....telegraph

LOOK BACK IN AWE

yo!...look forward in fear...innit!

PALOOKAVILLE FINANCIAL stardate : capitulation day+86

"2008: A year to forget, but one we won't be allowed to for a long, long time

This year has been a simply stunning one in financial markets."

terry smith : ..."I think that the downturn will be much more prolonged than usual. The average for the USA for 1854-2001 was 17 months, but the Great Depression of 1929-33 lasted 43 months and the grandaddy of recessions in this period was one which lasted 65 months from 1873-79. It would be wise to prepare for a long siege....

... This is why the next battle will be over the creditworthiness of governments and the strength of currencies. We have already seen the collapse of Iceland caused by its banks having liabilities which its economy couldn't guarantee. It may be tempting to see Iceland as an isolated and extreme case, but don't be fooled. Any country and currency is at risk which has guaranteed bank liabilities which are large in relation to its total economy....

...However, for me, the $64,000 question is not how long the recession will last or whether one or more currencies or governments' credit will be severely damaged; it is whether we will get deflation or inflation as a result of this crisis...

...To put it simply, a government can always raise interest rates until they have stifled inflation. But you cannot cut rates below zero. Japan's long deflation and recession after its asset bubble burst in the late 1980s shows how ineffective government policies can be against deflation. But one thing is clear: both inflation and deflation are pernicious, and we're definitely heading for one or the other, or maybe both in succession. sunday telegraph

"Experts can only guess as we head into the unknown"

irwin stelzer : ..." But we have moved beyond the range of what we know about credit crunches. All we know is that the results so far have not matched the predictions of the proponents of these policies. Which is one reason why Paulson decided not to use the second half of his $700 billion, and to leave it to the next Congress and the incoming president to decide whether it might not be better to pass the remaining $350 billion direct to homeowners who are falling behind with their mortgage payments. Surely that would reduce foreclosures and repossessions, thereby easing the glut of unsold homes, raising prices and helping to bring the recession to an end. Surely? Better, perhaps....

...the following opinions are best guesses based on the imperfect analytical tools in this economist’s tool kit, and a good deal of real-world experience.

So here goes: the second tranche of $350 billion should be aimed at easing credit markets rather than specifically at the housing market; the GM bailout will fail because the parties won’t give up enough to make the company competitive; the dollar won’t sink because there are few places investors can trust as much as the United States, even a heavily indebted United States. That much I know — well, think I know. sunday times

11:30 AM: "FT Alphaville, putting none too fine a point on it, calls its post "The Fed’s run out of money," and provided the text of the Treasury's press release. This bit caught my eye:
The Treasury Department announced today the initiation of a temporary Supplementary Financing Program at the request of the Federal Reserve. The program will consist of a series of Treasury bills, apart from Treasury’s current borrowing program, which will provide cash for use in the Federal Reserve initiatives.
"Temporary". If you believe that, I have a bridge I'd like to sell you....

In all seriousness, just like the Term Auction Facility and the other supposedly temporary special facilities, it will be very hard to wean the financial system off central bank support."

THE LETTER : INFLATION VERSION

Letter Rule

Under the terms of the Bank of England's mandate, King is obliged to write a letter of explanation to Darling if inflation breaches its 2 percent target by more than one percentage point. He must write another one if the rate exceeds that level for a further three months.

``Inflation is likely to remain markedly above the target until well into 2009,'' King wrote in a letter to Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling today. ``I continue to expect, therefore, that I will be writing further open letters to you over the next year.'' Bloomberg

CASANDRA DOES NAKED CAPITALISM

"Considering our location high on the ridgeline above the steep slopes of deflation on one side and the inflationary abyss n the other, and despite our slip (in the last two weeks) seemingly towards deflation,...."

Yo can get the full piece over in Naked Capitalism in the blog roll bar at side ....

As our reader will already know we have been discussing 'Flation over the last few posts and it is good to have a cool voice from Tokyo to cred. up the debate.

Cassandra also refers to a famous artist's (Demon Hurst) DIAMOND ENCRUSTED TITANIUM SKULL -

[damienhirstpa_450x300.jpg]
"Diamond-encrusted skulls, while not MY my metaphorical cup of tea, apparently are de rigeur in certain circles. I certainly am not qualified to pass judgment on this particular one's artistic merit. Nor do I wish (here) to sully those whose opinion of such a piece tends towards the favorable. So despite my inherent aesthetic and financial skepticism, I bring to your attention that it remains possible that - as with Faberge eggs - such curios might in fact turn out to be sound (and portable!) long term stores of value."

Demon is about the most famousist artist ever! so I guess casandra is probably right...

'VESTMENTS... update

Star Date : whatever +1 (07/30) the painter's birthday!

Yo! It ma birthday man! We dahn ere inna cargo hold checkin out the 'vestments. Sucker gotta revoo his vestments ever once'n a while. Birthday be a gooda time as any....

Previously...on Dorktrek : Lost In Space...

The crew from the loft in downtown Palookaville have fallen thru the back of a cornflakes box and onto the bridge of the United Flakes Starship Turnerprize which has been contacted with a strange warning about trillions of dollars being sucked into a deleveraging black hole. On the way to investigate the Turnerprize was caught up in the dreaded 'Flation - a nebula of the most disturbin kind.....read on at yo peril...

(Beulah) : Lootenant Uhura : What we doin dahn ere boss/ it stinky poo man! All ese boxes an stuff wi big letters on em SIV, CDO, ABS... seems like ever kind initial inna alpha bet. Boxes here spread out all over a place...

Picardthepainter : Cool it dude! these ere our future man. Itz 'vestments like these I been makin whilst y'all been in eyeburnation durin the long credit boom....

Uhura : Shoot boss! Summa these boxes be smaller an uvvas...sheeeit! even as we speak summa em is srinkin. Wosapnin man? `how we gon retyre in Palookaville iffn our 'vestments keeps shrinkin?

Picard : It's the freakin nebula man! It workin 'flation on us 'vestments... They shinkin cos the force be DEflation messed abaht by a bitta commodity driven INflation (it only appen inna nebula).

Uhura : Boss how come summa them vestments be smalla an sum bigga?

Picard : All 'vestments is equal but some is more equal than others...Yo see summa em is INvestments and summa em is DEvestments an some is just plain 'vestments....

Uhura : Say wot? Ah don geddit! Yo puts the same amounta money inta each 'vestment? An each does itz own thang? aint that a little bitty riksy dude?

Picard : Sho! It riksy but thats life shugga..Turns out some is good INvestments - thats the ones that go mostly UP and some DEvestments is bad, that is those that go mostly DOWN and some is just plain 'vestments that mostly go nowhere.

Zooney : (he the dog) I'm a outa space muppet atcherly divet! Boss they a silver linin inna plain 'vestments..

Spider : Pay im no notice! He a dog!

Zooney : As I woz sayin... Inna nebula "Flation goin crazy all ova a place...DEvestments inna toilet, srinkin by a minnit... Plain 'vestments can be liquidated fo cash an used to save the ship!

Incommin : Spider out onna web found this on naked capitalism -

"Of course, today’s mess was many years in the making and there is no easy, painless exit strategy. But the need to introduce more banking discipline is yet another reason why the policymakers must refrain from excessively expansionary macroeconomic policy at this juncture and accept the slowdown that must inevitably come at the end of such an incredible boom. For most central banks, this means significantly raising interest rates to combat inflation. For Treasuries, this means maintaining fiscal discipline rather than giving in to the temptation of tax rebates and fuel subsidies. In policymaker’s zealous attempts to avoid a plain vanilla supply shock recession, they are taking excessive risks with inflation and budget discipline that may ultimately lead to a much greater and more protracted downturn."

Course thats just part of it they a link to the rest of it over there on the control panel onna right

Laverne : I don wanna be Spock I wants to be Gilligan! OH! ...suckers watchin... Yo Skip! Is this Rogof arguin against Mish? or is it more complicated than that? This freakin nebula done messed with my head.

Spider : Krug. gotta good piece on the above Rogof article its onna right... or here

Spider(again) : get dis from Ambrose and this from James Clunie at the Telegraph.
This nebula man!!
