 bring back my glen-bott to me..

it's 1980..

and the artist has had his job made redundant..

instead of looking for a new one..

he paints this..

his latest idea..

of himself..

BRING BACK THE BOSTON RAG

another gentleman loser..

he longs to be back in school..

it's a girl thing..

maybe..

they say you can take the boy out of school..

but not the school out of the boy..

he is trapped in his past and all those moments..

LOST IN WONDER

that he'll never find again..

in the above painting..

it's 1965/66/67/68..

he is obsessed with American comic books..

and girls..

he is growing up with an alter ego..

a secret identity..

and there is no-one he can tell..

on the outside he is this milk toast..

panty waist..

on the inside there is..

you can see the spidey sense half face half spidey mask..

this is the way he communicates..

with marvel comics character images..

the London art establishment won't ever geddit..

but why let facts get in the way of a good story..

he tells himself. they will all come around..

he hopes to at least get a job in the bull pen..

drawing comics..

he hasn't looked up yet and seen the..

sistine chapel ceiling..

but he will..

BORN BACK CEASELESSLY INTO THE PAST

he paints himself in his school uniform..

in the old school classroom..

with the old school radiators and glass panel doors..

a girl walks past without looking in..

she cannot see him..

the other boys look on..

and laugh..

but they are just boys..

they cannot see the developing artist..

they don't get that kind of education..

they are not one of us..

 IN THE KARDOMAH WITH FLASH AND LIZ

it's 1968 and after school..

a young artist has made new friends..

since being taken up by Flash..

Liz and Julie and their crowd..

are putting the world to rights in the Kardomah cafe..

another up market joint..

Petey paint is happy here with these popular people..

he will hanker after these moments all of his life..

girls are noticing him..

and they like what they see..

this gang are all with him at the Saturday night parties...

that best of the year 11 experience..

he has a trendy haircut..

short but perfectly formed..

and new clothes..

some parallel trousers that..

Docile and Bruin helped him buy..

BTW

Docile was actually a rocker I believe..

he was a tough guy..

 meanwhile..

 back at the Kardomah..

Liz is radiant and painty is attracted to her..

a lot..

 Picture this..

A youngish man stands on a railway station platform. He is in Crewe. To get to Liverpool with his painting he must change at Derby and Crewe. This is a centre of the rail network even more than Derby.

Imagine him as if painted by Edward Hopper he is lit by slanting light just like in a Hopper painting. What is most striking about this person? Is it his hair? Is it his clothes? Is it his air of confidence? probably not.

The first thing you might notice about this figure is the eight ft wide by five ft high oil painting that he stands with on the railway platform. Is it wrapped up in brown paper? is it in a box? In a crate? 

No this oil painting is naked.. stark naked.

This is not a nude. This is 'Bring Back my Glen-Bott To Me' it is a large canvas divided by two diamond shapes. it has lots of paint marks strewn upon the whole area.. music actually or at least a rhythm. In the centre of the canvas and nearly as tall as the canvas is a figure.. It's a quote from Steve Ditko from the cover of Amazing Spiderman 27 'Bring Back My Goblin To Me'.

The Spidey figure has an old school uniform on.. sans blazer.. the face on the figure is the half Spidey face that he gets when his Spider sense is triggered. The other half of the face is the boy from the library.

Behind the figure is an open door from his old school classroom. A girl passes by out in the corridor.

Four school boys in full uniform point and laugh at the scene.

There is a lot of colour and the canvas is unmissable among the various travellers but no one seems to notice.

To get a painting to the John Moores Painting Prize submission agent in Liverpool you have to put in some effort.

Margaret Glen-Bott was a lady Gynaecologist and the school was named after her.

To travel in hope is a good thing.

IMAGINED ST IVES

ST IVES CORNWALL

Although they did not see themselves as part of a group or school,

the term St Ives School is often used to refer to the artists..

associated with the fishing town of St Ives in West Cornwall,

which became a centre for modern and abstract developments..

in British art from the 1940s to the 1960s

West Cornwall’s special quality of light has drawn painters to St Ives since the beginning of the nineteenth century. However the extension of the Great Western Railway to West Cornwall in 1877, which eased access to the remote town, made St Ives even more appealing as a destination for artists.

In 1928 the artists Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood visited St Ives where they met naïve artist Alfred Wallis, whose painting was to have a profound impact on Nicholson, confirming the modern direction of his work. In 1939 at the outbreak of the Second World War, Nicholson and his then wife the sculptor Dame Barbara Hepworth, both by then fully fledged abstract artists, settled near St Ives, where they were soon joined by the Russian constructivist sculptor Naum Gabo. After the war St Ives became a centre for modern and abstract developments in British art led by Hepworth and Nicholson (Gabo departed in 1946).

From about 1950 a group of younger artists gathered in St Ives and it is with this group, together with Hepworth and Nicholson (until his departure in 1958), that the term St Ives School is particularly associated. As well as a shared interested in abstraction, the St Ives artists were also inspired by the landscape of West Cornwall and used its shapes, forms and colours as a source for much of their work. The principal figures of the St Ives School include Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Paul Feiler, Sir Terry Frost, Patrick Heron, Roger Hilton, Peter Lanyon, Karl Weschke and Bryan Wynter, together with the pioneer modern potter, Bernard Leach.

The heyday of the St Ives School was in the 1950s and 1960s but in 1993, Tate St Ives, a striking purpose-built new gallery in a remarkable situation on Porthmeor Beach in St Ives, was opened. It exhibits the Tate collection of St Ives School art and related types of art, and has given the town a whole new lease of artistic life.
